Going to Docs today.
1. Bucket (It beats yarfing in the toilet. No splash back.)
2. Clean clothing (Nice to put on clean dry clothes.)
3. Clean Hair (Haven't washed it in a week. Don't judge me.)
4. Good Insurance (using it today.)
5. Prayers (Need them).

Attitude of Gratitude Day 9
This is more a basic list today.
1. Shelter (Had a conversation with Aimee today about living in different circumstances. I often lament not having a house of my own but as there are always people who have it 'better' than you, there are always those who have it 'worse' as well. Who have less. I am blessed to live with a roof over my head, in an insulated dwelling, with carpeted (not dirt) floors. To have refrigeration for my food and running water and amenities.)
2. Carrots in a Cup (Nice to have something immediately tangible that takes no preparation!)
3. Washer (Steve often talks of how the people he knew in Mexico did most of their washing by hand using a washboard. As I am less dedicated to that type of tenacity I am really glad to have a washer!)
4. Phone (Still such a good thing to call people and hear a friendly voice on the other end of the line).
5. Prayers (The prayers of my husband and my friends have been what have kept me going. Today the pain is worse and I am trying to decide if I should go back to the doctor's ASAP. I think prayer is sustaining me and I hope it continues to do so until this is all sorted out.)
Consider the blessings in your lives and write them down so you can go back to them again!

Attitude of Gratitude Day 8
Today has been another struggle. Nevertheless, there is still beauty in the small things.
1. Pepto Bismol (I've had tummy issues today so having those little cherry flavored chewables was a good thing!)
2. HGTV (Had a really enjoyable time just curling up on the couch with my sweetheart and watching people explore the possibilities for their first homes. Some of my favorite shows are the ones that take place overseas and give me a new perspective on life and culture. Today we saw a lady choose a new home in Israel. The tiled floors and the cultural markings through the houses she inspected were truly beautiful.)
3. Photographs (Had a conversation with Aimee the other day about photographs and I was thinking today how I am grateful to have captured many of those favorite moments in time and have them to look back at from the present moment.)
4. Aslan (Wrote the first check for the first car payment today. While we have to rework the budget to fit this new payment in, I am really happy to have a reliable vehicle. I'm glad to write the check and have the comfort of knowing things will be taken care of if any issues come up.)
5. ThermaCare (Again. The tummy issues. The thermacare is being a really big help today!)
That's it for now. I hope you are all doing well and that you have some great memories and gratitudes of your own to write down!

Attitude of Gratitude Day 7
Today's List:
1. Hulu (It's a nice way to relax and catch up on the shows that I don't get to watch during the week. Today I caught up on House, Grey's Anatomy, Bones, and Supernanny.)
2. Digital Camera (I really appreciate having the ability to take photos on the spur of the moment. Today I snapped some cute pictures of the dogs sleeping on their backs with their feet up in the air! It's hard to believe that I went for YEAR without being able to capture all of these little moments. It makes me wish I had a digital camera back during the college days!)
3. Digital Files (Once again it is getting closer to tax time and I am glad that most of my 'paperwork' for the season is in digital format. The End of Year Summaries and other things that I can gain access to online help to make my job easier when it comes time to gather all of the numbers together.)
4. God's Grace (Today I was able to offer comfort to my dear friend as one of her dogs suffered from being hit by a vehicle. As of this writing, it looks like the dog will survive, however she will lose one of her eyes to this tragedy. I am thankful that my friend's brother was able to step up and step in and get the sweet puppy the medical attention she needed and deserved. And I pray and have faith and hope that the kindhearted dog will be able to adapt and thrive, as she is so well loved.)
5. A Note of Appreciation (Some dear friends from college recently suffered the loss of one of their children. Another friend offered to create a memorial fund, allowing those of us who are unable to be there in person to show our love and gratitude to this very wonderful couple and their family. We contributed our own donation and to my surprise I received an email that personally thanked me - from the woman who was the contact with the family and was able to give them the combined gift. It addressed me by name and it expressed sincere appreciation for what we had offered and how everyone had come together to show their love and support. While the thank you was not necessary it truly reflects what a class act this family is, that they are reaching out to reflect that love back to each of us and tell us that we are known and individually appreciated.)
Hug those you love a little closer. Pet your furry ones a few extra times. And count your blessings!

Attitude of Gratitude Day 6
This will be a very relationship centered post.
1. Nicole F. (I had the privilege of talking to a friend of mine today on FB. We do not chat often but whenever we have the opportunity to speak to one another I am always surprised to learn that we have a great many things in common. We both have strong beliefs about family, about loving our husbands, and following the Lord's Will in our own lives. She is someone that I truly admire, both for her testimony and her mad organizational skills. I hope to learn more things from her in the future!)
2. One of my nieces was baptized today! (Being a convert to my chosen religion it is such a joy when someone else makes the choice to commit to the gospel (or a given set of values). It is a time of rejoicing and a tremendous leap of faith that carries with it great rewards both now and further down the road of life.)
3. Another niece turned 12 today! (I held her a few weeks after she was born and it is amazing to think of how she has grown and changed and become this lovely young woman. I wish for her all good things and hope she had a lovely celebration!)
4. Tussinex (Last night was probably the first deep sleep I've had in ages. I attribute it to the Rx cough syrup. It was nice to be able to sleep and to not be in any pain.)
5. Burritos (I've used that one before but I really appreciated having dinner already made for me when I woke up. I didn't have to worry about what to eat so that I could take my meds. I just had to pop it in the microwave and then in my tummy it went! So tasty!)
Sorry the list was short today but that's just how some days go. I hope you take a few moments to think over the bright spots in your own day!

Attitude of Gratitude Day 5
It has been a hard day, so this will be short.
1. Jeans (Today I tried on my jeans, the ones that I had been wearing before my surgery. I've not put them on since September, as the scars would be irritated by the waistband. To my surprise, they fit. They are a little baggy even!)
2. Aimee (It means something indescribable to have a friend who will stay up with you until your husband comes home from work. Even if that means she loses sleep in the process. Tonight I was in pain and I was scared, but Aimee stayed on the line and read to me and talked to me until Steve got here. I can't express how much I appreciate her diligence and her love.)
3. Boots (A friend from college is offering to give away several pairs of boots. It so happens that the items are just in my size. I've been praying and hoping for a way to find some new boots because they are what I tend to pair with my skirts for church. Since I outgrew my last pair I really have no decent church shoes. While it's not a done deal yet, a few other people want in on the awesome boot action, I am still excited for the possibility of having a new-to-me pair!)
4. Running Water (I used the warm compress on my eyes today (again) and I do realize it is a blessing to have HOT running water. To not have to take the time to heat up the water in order to make it useful.)
5. Books (Aimee read me some more things by Vashti McKenzie and I found them very enlightening and inspirational. She also read some Shel Silverstein poems which I found very amusing. It's good to have those things to take my mind off the worry.)
I hope you're all doing well and that you have had good things in your life to cherish today!

Attitude of Gratitude Day 4
This one is going to be short because I am tired and need to head to bed for an early appt. tomorrow.
1. Daddy! (I was blessed with the opportunity of talking to my Daddy on the phone today! It is his birthday and I am so glad to celebrate it with him - more in spirit than in physical presence due to distance but the sentiment and love is still there!)
2. Sarah (My dear friend from LJ, Sareah, tagged me on a FB status update. She thanked me for posting this: Sweat, Tears or the Sea. Long story short is the post was a well thought out response to an article that appeared in the NYT that was written by an LDS woman who advocated that breaking the law of chastity made her a 'grow-up' and that God could not have wanted her to deny herself of all of these worldly experiences. The rebuttal, cited in the link, was very thought provoking and centered on the fact that you do things, you keep the commandments, you center your life on Christ because you LOVE Christ and you have the faith your individual experiences are meant for your personal growth and empowerment. Sarah found some wonderful things in the article that she loved and agreed with and I appreciated her thanking me for posting it. I was, honestly, touched that something I made note of would pass along and bring more light to others. Which is saying that while I didn't need to be acknowledged, I appreciated the heads up that she had found something worthwhile in those words as well! We all empower one another and thus the light grows brighter and brighter!)
3. Scanner (Tonight I was able to assist my husband by scanning in some paperwork that he needs for his Grad Class. I am grateful to have the equipment and proper programs to do this. It seems like such a small thing but sometimes the small things make a big difference.)
4. Reconnecting (I got to talk to Tanya today. After almost three or four months of not catching up it was great to hear how she was doing. She doesn't realize it, but she often amazes me with her inner sense of strength. I am proud to know her and proud of all the things she does to better her family and continue her own personal growth.)
5. Melodie! (I also got to talk to Mel after spending a long time communicating via internet. It was great to hear her voice on the other end of the line and to speak of families and life. She is one of my Sources of Strength. I don't think she knows this. I did tell her so tonight but I don't know if she believes it - as it is always hard to believe that we, alone, are amazing, in and of ourselves. She shines a light, and I often find we reflect ideas back and forth and gain wisdom from one another.)
6. Happy Beginnings (My dear friend from college is engaged! It's not who most people think. My lovely, eternal bachelor Barslund has found a husband-to-be to settle down with. While I don't agree with everything he does - the boy was quite a party animal in his day (and probably still is, tho I'm not there to witness it) I am so happy that he's finally found someone to commit his heart to! He's a good friend and one of the few people who picked me up during my darkest phase of Depression in college. I'll always be grateful that he looked after me for parts of that last year. I wish him and his boy every happiness!)
7. Chapstick (My sweetheart bought me a new stick just the other day. I'd lamented on not having one. I refused to use the ones I had in my possession when I got severely ill, not wanting to pick those germs up again, thank you! I'm very content at having a fresh stick to use for my forever dry lips.)
8. Tax Software (Taxes are something that take a lot of effort for me. Putting my head in a numbers game does not come naturally. However, I gather up the documents every year and I am glad to have a program that is both intuitive and informative to work with. I can easily find answers to my questions and concerns, thus getting me one step closer to putting the demon to bed for another year!)
9. Insurance (I am really grateful to have medical insurance. Suffering the numerous medical issues that I do, I am often relieved that we do not have to pay out of pocket for the various RXs, copays, office visits, and tests. Having lived without insurance before, it is truly a blessing to have the expenses covered.)
10. Tags (Our vehicle tags arrived two days ago. My husband put the license plate on the car and it now seems to feel more a part of the family than it did previously. Not that I didn't love Aslan before but somehow part of Kermit lives on by sharing the plate with the new offspring.)
That's all for now. I hope you all get some rest and that you reflect on your own shining moments (be they large or small).

Attitude of Gratitude Day 3
Another day that started with more downs than ups. Nevertheless, here is my list:
1. Inspirational Quotes (The most recent was one that Aimee read to me over the phone the other day. It is from a book called 'Journey to the Well' by Vashti McKenzie. I've always found strength in uplifting words but lately these thoughts seem to have very strong staying power and application to what I've been going through. I appreciate the wisdom at a time of darkness when the grey clouds are gathering.)*
2. 'I am NOT my body' (There was a video done by a woman named Stephenie Nielson. It can be located on Youtube. The basic heart of the eight minute segment deals with how SHE has chosen to confront the challenges in her life. You see, she and her husband were in a plane crash. Both survived but she ended up disfigured and still suffers health repercussions from the incident. She created a blog five years ago to detail her day to day experiences and to share the ups and downs with others. She was inspired to do this after hearing a talk by one of the Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about reaching out and giving to others and how the internet can be a powerful tool to do so. Her 'I am not my body' statement struck right at the heart of my emotions today. It is something vital that I need to remember while dealing with all of these medical maladies. I found her words inspiring, galvanizing, and I want to be more like her in my attitude from here on out.)
3. Lindor Peanut Butter Balls (I first tasted these while working for Borders way back in 2003. They became my favorite break-time snack. Today they were especially soothing. It was nice to just pause a moment in my day, pop one in my mouth and enjoy the burst of peanut butter flavor as it erupted across my tongue. Some pick-me-ups are small, yet nevertheless still cherished.)
4. Chicken Noodle Soup (Having a warm meal, one that is quickly made, for dinner also offers its own type of comfort. Knowing that it is fairly healthy and wouldn't tax my system - which seems already overloaded and haywire today - was a bonus.)
5. Alpha and Omega (This was a cute movie. Steve rented it on the fly a day ago and we just got to watch it this evening. It met all of my expectations for the film, as some parts in the previews did look a little hokey. Still, beyond the cheese were several very touching moments of love and friendship. It is going on my wishlist and I applaud the writers and other talents that came together to make this film. Part Romeo and Juliet, Part Lion King, and All Heart!)
6. Stephen the Spider Slayer (There was a large nickel/quarter sized spider in our Master Bathroom last night. My husband, who dislikes them as much as I do, was kind enough to dispatch it. I greatly appreciate him for doing this because I know he has quicker reflexes than I do and I know that he typically does not like doing such things. He believes in catching them and letting them go, that there is a type of Karma to it all, if he refuses to squish the bug then he himself will not later be squished by something else. However, he sets that aside to make me feel comfortable in our home and agrees to follow my policy of 'if it invades my space then it has to go').
7. White Cheddar Kettle Corn (Made in Popcorn, IN this is some of the best popcorn I have ever tasted! It was a real treat to have it while enjoying our film together! And even better that it was poured into a large bowl that afforded me the opportunity of picking the kernels carefully and making sure I didn't repeat past experiences and get one that cracked my teeth. I have an absurd talent for always finding one of the 'not-fully-popped' kernels. Tonight I was able to bypass the pattern!)
8. Jersey Sheets (Today it was freezing cold outside. And, although it took awhile, I was really grateful for my cotton T-shirt sheets and the warmth they (eventually) afforded my body!)
9. Puppies (They are a source of constant amusement. Today I watched Duncan lure Mei into a game of tug by picking up her Loofah Dog baby and playing 'Keep Away'. When she finally got ahold of one end of it, she couldn't shake him off, though she valiantly kept trying to! I was able to snatch up the camera and record a bit of her dragging him across the carpet. He looks hilarious because his front feet are splayed to either side and his teeth are dug in and he's just losing ground inch by inch. But he still refuses to let go. He's more dominant than Mei Mei is but they're adapting well to one another and giving each other a good run for their money!)
10. Being of Service (The other day I was asked to set up a writing spot for a relative of mine. I spend almost an hour setting up the account, picking out color themes I thought the requester would like, and choosing and uploading several icons I hoped they would enjoy. I had a lot of fun with the process and I noticed that I was excited to FEEL USEFUL. I spend so many days feeling like I can't really accomplish much of anything due to my health concerns and it was really a wonderful change to be able to do something for someone else, where I was able to pour my love and creative powers into it. So even thought it was thought that I was doing the helping by creating things and setting them up, the Requester was also doing me a favor by giving me a task that left me feeling proud of myself and that I could contribute something meaningful TO THEM in return.)
That's it for now. Off to tuck the husband into bed! I hope all of you can find the bright spots in your own day and jot them down. They will serve as shining stars to you when the days seem darker or more lonely.
*" Many women have been wounded by poor decisions; decisions they made and decisions others made for them. They have been forced to retreat because they cannot connect with their sisters, shrouded by the must-dos of their own lives. We can see ourselves reflected in her (the Samaritan woman) journey, trudging through the necessary task of water retrieval, hesitating at the unexpected intruder who shatters our anonymity, exposing our vulnerabilities at the well. We are shocked when he ignores cultural taboos and speaks to us. We identify with her probing questions, and we duck and dodge disclosing our own intimacies.
As we make our journey out of our limitations-habitual, historical, and cultural-toward what we will come to know as our Created Purpose. we pause to reflect upon our past mistakes. If all you have is a little bit, make the most of it. If all you have is a dream, hold on to your dream. If all you have is one hope, hold on. If all you have is broken pieces, gather them up and hold on until your dream comes true. If all you have is an idea, nurture it. If all you have is a rope, tie a knot in it and hold on. And if all you have is one well outside of town, get to it. Open your eyes to see the Jesus who was there all along in the ordinary places of your life. Take your one hope and your last things and become a woman of hope. Begin now to celebrate the woman you are becoming, a woman of hope "

Attitude of Gratitude Day 2
Today it has been significantly harder to find those gems of gratitude and those peaceful moments. In light of that, I'm going to only shoot for seven on my list (since I am not sure to reach the extended ten).
1. Pepsi Throwback (It has been a real challenge to eat breakfast in the mornings. Due to the medication I am taking, items containing iron, calcium, and magnesium cannot be ingested two hours before or after the pill itself. Because of this I'm avoiding dairy, including butter, so the breakfast bagels have been plain and boring. Thankfully the Pepsi has helped me keep the food down and adds more zest to my meal.)
2. Burritos! (My loving husband made them up last night. So today when I started feeling ill and realized it was due to not eating for four hours I had instant food at my disposal. Quick to heat and get into my tummy before any further dizziness set in.)
3. Unexpected Email From Ray (When I emailed him expressing my thoughts on a subject he commented on the forums about, I never truly expected to get a response back. I only knew that his opinions and sentiments had touched me for the better and had wanted to share that with him. It was a pleasant surprise to hear back from him and gain even more insight into the soul of a very kind individual.)
4. Quiet Time Together (I'm still sick and generally unhappy but I did still cherish the time I spent curled up with Steve on the couch and watching V and First Place together.)
5. Spontaneous Phone Calls (Aimee called me this afternoon and I was able to return her call - her timing was good because I had just finished doing a warm compress on my eye about three minutes before the phone rang. We spent most of the afternoon talking and sharing insights into life and tossing around ideas for our stories. It was an uplifting way to spend the day and take my mind off of all the troubles that beset me.)
6. Packages from Mommy! (The box came yesterday and it contained my snoopy flannel pants and my Jim Brickman backpack. My loving Mom carefully sewed the four inch rip in the inseam of the pants and repaired the horrible gash I cut into the backpack when inexpertly opening the cheap envelope it came mailed in. I was thrilled to get my items in their newly repaired condition! And I enjoyed the note and the stickers on the outside of the box. You have to admit: Stickers make you happy! No matter what age you are, they make you smile. And so do handwritten notes from people you love! Thanks Mom!)
7. A Handwritten Card (A few weeks ago my sweet friend Melodie sent me a card in the mail. It took me awhile to sort the mail and then a day or so after to open and read the card. When I did I was truly touched by the sentiments she expressed inside. I am really grateful for the love of my kind friend and the way in which she reached out to me. The card is a reminder of how much I am cared for and it came at a time when I particularly needed to feel the warmth of friendship in my life!)
That's my list for the day. I hope you all get a chance to make a list of your own and recognize the small gems in your life. May they sparkle in your darker moments and may you share them and that light with others on your way.
